Red, she said!
Gwyneth Paltrow might have put it best: “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” And then there’s what burlesque queen Dita Von Teese once told the New York Times: “Heels and red lipstick will put the fear of God into people.”
When it comes to makeup, nothing quite rivals the power of a red lip: it’s always classic but current. A crimson pout will elevate your outfit, up your glam factor, and make a statement all in one swipe. Here are our favorite picks from around Fashion Island and Irvine Spectrum Center.
Chanel Rouge Coco
Spring’s best new lipstick might just be the ultraglamorous Chanel Rouge Coco. It combines the best parts of a lip gloss, lipstick and lip balm while also being weightless, non-sticky, moisturizing and non-gloppy. There are four reds in the collection – we love Gabrielle, a warm red; Arthur, a gorgeous medium-orange red with shine and Etienne, a darker, cranberry-esque red that actress Keira Knightley (the face of Chanel’s Rouge Coco ad campaign) wore to this year’s Golden Globes. $36, at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s at Fashion Island.
NARS Audacious Lipstick Collection
NARS is known for its deep and intense hues and its latest new ‘Audacious‘ collection yields some of its boldest colors yet. For a knockout, orange-red, try the Annabella (a poppy red) or the Lana. For a neutral red or classic scarlet, try the Marlene or Rita. $32, at Nordstrom at Fashion Island and Irvine Spectrum Center.
Tom Ford Scarlet Rouge
Tom Ford’s lipsticks could possibly be the best on the market right now: ultra rich, long-wearing shades that are vivid and creamy (but not greasy) and somehow matte, but not drying. Seriously, we are addicted! We especially love Scarlet Rouge – it’s a universally flattering shade of brick red and best of all, it wears beautifully and fades evenly into a lovely stain. $50, Neiman Marcus at Fashion Island.
Urban Decay Mrs. Mia Wallace
Urban Decay’s edgy, dark red lipstick, “Mrs. Mia Wallace,” evokes the essence of Uma Thurman’s character in the Tarantino cult classic. This bold lipstick is a blood-red hue with soft shine, a must-have in the purse of any girl who wants a little danger on her lips. $22, Urban Decay at Fashion Island.
MAC Russian Red, Lady Danger or Ruby Woo
MAC is every gal’s go-to when it comes to instant va-va-voom lip color at approachable price points. MAC’s array of reds always deliver: you can’t go wrong with Russian Red (a deep matte red), Lady Danger (a bright coral red) or Ruby Woo (classic cherry red). $16, at Nordstrom at Fashion Island and Irvine Spectrum Center.
