Distressed denim is everywhere these days but if you thought regular denim shopping was tough (what with all the assorted washes and fits), we can certainly understand any trepidation of sifting through stacks of beat-up, thrashed jeans and painstakingly trying them on without you know, accidentally shoving your legs through the shredded holes and adding further distress to said jeans. Fret not, we did all the hard work for you.
We teamed up with local O.C. fashion blogger Amanda from Feast.Fashion.Faves to try on a mountain of distressed jeans at The World Denim Bar at American Rag Cie, otherwise known as denim central and home to brands like One Teaspoon, Current/Elliott, Strom, Siwy, Mother, AG Jeans, Paige, Joe’s Jeans, NEUW, Paper Denim & Cloth and more.
We found our Top 5 favorite pairs, put together a handy little shopping guide aaaaaand best of all, you, dear reader, can enter-to-win a pair of distressed denim from American Rag Cie! Fashion Island is giving away a pair of distressed denim to THREE lucky readers. Enter below, but first, the lowdown on our picks:
Current/Elliott “The Fling” ($268) – If you’re seeking a heavily tattered look with a boyfriend fit, these definitely fit the bill. Boyfriend jeans are tricky, they generally look best on long (read: lean) figures like Amanda’s (left). On Amanda, they looked great cuffed and paired with a strong ankle boot for fall. For gals who have more of curvy build, you could run the risk of looking frumpy in the front and back – nothing an oversized sweater or blazer couldn’t help, perhaps?
AG Jeans/The Super Skinny Legging Ankle in Fog ($225) – We were dubious of the matchy-matchy knee holes at first, but these look great on and the skinny fit was flattering – the denim is actually soft, with nice give. These are great for pairing with a blazer, T and some heels for a casual but stylish enough look for the office (on a Friday for sure) or out for dinner and drinks with company.
NEUW / “Sister Ray” ($149) – We were totally anti-boyfriend jeans (having tried on practically every single pair/brand in years past) but these won us over. The slouchy fit is super comfortable, the distressing just right and the reasonable price point further sealed the deal. It likely won’t win you any sexy points with the mister, but you might want to live in them. Confession: I bought a pair and have worn them two days in a row. (The husband loathes them.)
Joe’s Jeans / Finn Skinny Ankle Braelyn – $198 – These drew immediate approval. The fit was very flattering and slimming (black is always such a reliable shade isn’t it?) but we absolutely dug the cool but delicately shredded patches right above the one knee that allowed for a minimal amount of leg to show through.
Frame Denim / Le Skinny Satine Warren ($219) – Of all the jeans we tried, these were the most soft (like butta!) and the fit felt incredibly comfortable. A definite must-buy, and it doesn’t hurt that gray is the IT neutral for fall. Am envisioning a full gray-on-gray ensemble here: gray jeans with an oversized cashmere gray or cable-knit sweater or wool coat with pops of taupe or camel suede either via booties, scarves or ooh, nude stilettos.
I think we have to call out one more pair as an honorable mention:
STROM / Tio Jaguar ($209) – These ran very long on our 5’4″ frames, but they would probably be amazing as-is on someone just a smidgen taller. We loved the subtle dots of distress that ran up along the sides of the upper leg versus the usual knee area. And the denim was soft, with a nice amount of stretch.
